I'm hooked onto this series again.

I first read this book in 2012. This is a book on how a mortal girl, Meghan Chase, travelled into the Faery realm against all odds to save her little half-brother Ethan from the clutches of the Fae. Of course she had help of 2 boys from opposing Courts in Faery, Puck from the Summer Court and Prince Ash from the Winter Court and a witty cat, Grimalkin.

Through this treacherous journey, Meghan learnt the truth about her own heritage, the secret behind her closest friend in the mortal world and the impending danger that was approaching them all in the land of Fae. What is she going to do to save her little brother? What are the sacrifices to be made?

I simply enjoyed the characters' interaction, which can be really funny at times with a prankster around an icy prince. The author is really good at pulling me into the story, making me feel what Meghan was feeling and how anxious I was to see her succeed in the trials. I'm really glad I picked up the series again. It's fall, which means it's the perfect time for mama's apple pie. The only problem? These apples are hard to reach! But Bunny has some ideas. Young readers will delight in using the red ribbon to help Bunny reach new heights and pick those tasty apples. But the fun doesn't end there! Readers will also rock the book back and forth and turn it round and round for a one-of-a-kind roller-coaster adventure on Bunny's way home. Claudia Rueda shakes up the reading experience once again in this delightful sequel to Bunny Slopes.

I read this book to my 6 month-old girl and she loves it! I love how interactive this book is, with prompts for us to do certain action as we follow the bunny around. At one point, we were prompted to turn the book 360 degrees and my little girl was delighted. In addition, the book also made use of a red ribbon as a scarf, which was a tool in the story. Fantastic. I borrowed the book from the library and now I have to buy a copy for myself to keep at home.

Guards Gone Wild! is a memoir of Teck Yong's experiences in the private security industry. There’s plenty to tell. Scams perpetrated by security agencies and guards. Intense confrontations with delinquents and work colleagues. Funny moments to make you laugh and frustrating moments that made him cry. And so on and so forth.

But Teck Yong doesn't want you to just laugh or cry along with him. In order to reduce conflicts between security guards and the general public, he thinks there are some serious questions that need to be asked.

For example, why are some shopping malls are more popular with delinquents than others? Why do security guards get cranky when customers want to enter the department store at the very last minute? Are security guards overworked? What are the negative effects of sleep deprivation? The answers to these questions and more can be found in his book.

My first historical romance book by Eloisa James and I am certain it won't be the last! I finished this book in less than 12 hours and enjoyed it very much. The bargain was what drew my attention and made me curious.

The story starts with when Mia and Vander were young. Mia was humiliated when her secret poem to Vander was disclosed but instead of cowering behind, she showed her inner strength when she came out from her hiding spot to face the group of boys who mocked her poem. Vander was with the group. Fast forward many years later, Mia was faced with no choice but to seek Vander for marriage to keep her nephew with her.

What I like about the book is the cast of characters, especially Vander's uncle, who injected some fun into the story with his antics. I like the bickering between Mia and Vander too and how both of them slowly come to terms with their feelings for each other. I also love it that Mia is an author in the book! How exciting! The thing that had me frowning was Mia's low self-esteem due to her figure.

This book can be read as a standalone, which was what I did and I'm ready to dive into the rest of the author's books!

Pax was only a kit when his family was killed, and “his boy” Peter rescued him from abandonment and certain death. Now the war front approaches, and when Peter’s father enlists, Peter has to move in with his grandpa. Far worse than being forced to leave home is the fact that Pax can’t go. Peter listens to his stern father—as he usually does—and throws Pax’s favorite toy soldier into the woods. When the fox runs to retrieve it, Peter and his dad get back in the car and leave him there—alone. But before Peter makes it through even one night under his grandfather’s roof, regret and duty spur him to action; he packs for a trek to get his best friend back and sneaks into the night. This is the story of Peter, Pax, and their independent struggles to return to one another against all odds.

Told from the alternating viewpoints of Peter and Pax, this story truly showcases Sara’s mastery of characterization and her fluent ability to pay off small yet beautiful details. The conflicts that Peter faces are mostly internal and center around the anger that has affected both him and his father in the wake of his mother’s unexpected death. Peter can’t shake his grandfather’s claim that “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” when he wants so badly to distinguish himself from his closed-off father. Pax’s hardships, on the other hand, are more external; his domestication has left him an unskilled hunter and misled him as to the true nature of men. However, it is the beautifully-crafted characters that Peter and Pax encounter on their separate journeys who ultimately help the protagonists find what they are looking for, in addition to each other. These distinctive and multi-dimensional individuals leave a rare kind of impression on the reader while subtly infusing it with themes of loyalty, self-worth, denial, and truth.

This book really breaks my heart. This story is told from dual POVs--Peter and his pet fox, Pax. Peter was forced to abandon Pax when his father enlists in the war. Peter was then sent to his grandfather's place, where he made the decision to head back to look for Pax against all odds.

Pax believed that Peter will come back for him and waited. However, things were not so smooth for the fox. He needed food and water and there were dangers all around him.

This story about loyalty and friendship touched me. However, for a middle grade fiction, there were mentions of animals being killed and a scene where a landmine detonated. It won't be pleasant for the young ones to be reading these. This story also touches on the element of strength and resilience, when Peter was injured but still determined to find Pax despite his injuries.

Pax is an emotional read about the strong friendship between Peter and Pax and the adventure they had while trying to find each other. I'd advise parental guidance when it comes to reading this book with the younger ones due to the themes of war and death.
Once upon a time Cynthia was the perfect housewife. Between being the President of the PTA and keeping her home spotless without a hair (or her pearls) out of place, her life was a dream come true. At The Stroke Of Midnight centers around Cynthia, a perfect housewife whose husband abandoned her for their babysitter, leaving her and their daughter behind penniless. She tried her best to hide the truth from everyone she knew but things were getting difficult when she faced money problems. She need to get money fast...

I bought this book after reading a review from a book blogger and thought it would be a fun read. At The Stroke Of Midnight is a fast paced book but I could not relate to the characters in it. Sure, it is a fun read but I still could not understand the logic behind their decision to become strippers. To me, she was just whining throughout the book and it annoyed me. The part where she shined was when she stood up against her husband at the end.

This book wasn't for me but if you like the premise, go ahead and read it.

Classic movie fan Bailey “Mink” Rydell has spent months crushing on a witty film geek she only knows online as Alex. Two coasts separate the teens until Bailey moves in with her dad, who lives in the same California surfing town as her online crush.

Faced with doubts (what if he’s a creep in real life—or worse?), Bailey doesn’t tell Alex she’s moved to his hometown. Or that she’s landed a job at the local tourist-trap museum. Or that she’s being heckled daily by the irritatingly hot museum security guard, Porter Roth—a.k.a. her new archnemesis. But life is a whole lot messier than the movies, especially when Bailey discovers that tricky fine line between hate, love, and whatever it is she’s starting to feel for Porter.

And as the summer months go by, Bailey must choose whether to cling to a dreamy online fantasy in Alex or take a risk on an imperfect reality with Porter. The choice is both simpler and more complicated than she realizes, because Porter Roth is hiding a secret of his own: Porter is Alex…Approximately.

Took me a while to get my hands on this book after I saw it on some book blogs. I was already looking forward to reading about how their online identities will be revealed to each other. I wasn't disappointed and I thought that the characters' shock was expressed pretty well.

I felt that the author did a good job in creating relatable characters. I particularly like the friendship between Bailey and Grace. The only thing I wished the author would have touched more upon was the relationship between Bailey and her mom. I felt that it was just a touch and go thing. It would be good if there was more about them.

Overall, Alex, Approximately is an enjoyable and cute read for me even though the plot was predictable. Looking forward to reading other books by the author.

I'm not a very big fan of dystopian reads but somehow the summary of scythe convinced me to give it a try. A world where there is no hunger, no disease, no war and no misery. Plus the fact that there is no death except for death by scythes' hands to keep the population under control. These are what got me thinking about how the story will turn out.

We first learnt about Citra and Rowan (what unique names they have) and their families and how they first came into contact with the scythe who will eventually take them as apprentices. The world building is realistic and kept me engaged throughout the story and I'm impressed by how the story unfolds--the unexpected twists and turns that had me hanging by the edge of my seat.

I really enjoyed reading Scythe, especially about the character growth of Citra. Once I have finished reading Scythe, I went to hunt for the second book immediately. That's how much I really want to continue reading the story. I'll recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading this genre.

Updates

It has been almost a month since the last Sunday Post on Bookish Michelle! I put the blame on procrastination and laziness. Didn't get to read as much as I wanted to in May but I will have more time in June since I have reduced the number of my weekend classes. My legs gets tired easily from hours of standing in classroom and they cramp in the middle of the night while I sleep. It's very awful... That's the downside of pregnancy I guess. I won't be working July so I'll have even more time to read. I'm soooo looking forward to that!

Did some doodling for my online greeting card shop. The website has been down since January as my partner and I were too busy with work to focus on creating new designs. Meanwhile, I've started on working on my graphic tablet and graphic design programme and created a new logo for the shop. My partner is super happy with it and prefers the word version over the round logo version.
Theodosia was six when her country was invaded and her mother, the Fire Queen, was murdered before her eyes. On that day, the Kaiser took Theodosia's family, her land, and her name. Theo was crowned Ash Princess--a title of shame to bear in her new life as a prisoner.

For ten years Theo has been a captive in her own palace. She's endured the relentless abuse and ridicule of the Kaiser and his court. She is powerless, surviving in her new world only by burying the girl she was deep inside.

Then, one night, the Kaiser forces her to do the unthinkable. With blood on her hands and all hope of reclaiming her throne lost, she realizes that surviving is no longer enough. But she does have a weapon: her mind is sharper than any sword. And power isn't always won on the battlefield.

For ten years, the Ash Princess has seen her land pillaged and her people enslaved. That all ends here.

Found this book in the catalogue from one of the local bookstores in Singapore and the super short summary there caught my attention. I went to Goodreads immediately and found out that this is actually the first book in the trilogy which was released this year. This means to say that if I were to get this book, I have to wait for quite some time before being able to continue the story. Should I get this? Will you get this book if you are interested in it, like I do?

The cover! Just look at the cover, will you? Such a stunning cover worthy of attention. (I'm sorry that I picked books based on covers... but hey, it works well!)

Having said that, I think that the plot is compelling as well. I'm really interested to read this book but the thing is that this is a series. Not too sure if I can wait that long to read the next book in the series. Ah well, I'll keep this book under my radar.
Updates

Had a not so hectic week as compared to last week as I've managed to squeeze in some reading time after I knocked off from work at night and before going to sleep. Accidentally fell asleep twice during the week though as I was really tired. Did I mention that I'm into my third trimester of pregnancy? Perhaps that's what made me really sleepy.

Finished a book this week! So, yay to me! Intending to read more since I've stopped providing the short story writing services for others but I have plans to write some children stories of my own (that'll come later, if I don't procrastinate..) I'm also trying to pick up some cute drawing skills from reading those tutorial books. Hope it'll come in handy for my greeting card store online (which is still undergoing 'renovation').
From New York Times bestselling author Mariah Stewart comes the first novel in her all-new series, The Hudson Sisters, following a trio of reluctant sisters as they set out to fulfill their father’s dying wish. In the process, they find not only themselves, but the father they only thought they knew.

When celebrated and respected agent Fritz Hudson passes away, he leaves a trail of Hollywood glory in his wake—and two separate families who never knew the other existed. Allie and Des Hudson are products of Fritz’s first marriage to Honora, a beautiful but troubled starlet whose life ended in a tragic overdose. Meanwhile, Fritz was falling in love on the Delaware Bay with New Age hippie Susa Pratt—they had a daughter together, Cara, and while Fritz loved Susa with everything he had, he never quite managed to tell her or Cara about his West Coast family.

Now Fritz is gone, and the three sisters are brought together under strange circumstances: there’s a large inheritance to be had that could save Allie from her ever-deepening debt following a disastrous divorce, allow Des to open a rescue shelter for abused and wounded animals, and give Cara a fresh start after her husband left her for her best friend—but only if the sisters upend their lives and work together to restore an old, decrepit theater that was Fritz’s obsession growing up in his small hometown in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains. Guided by Fritz’s closest friend and longtime attorney, Pete Wheeler, the sisters come together—whether they like it or not—to turn their father’s dream into a reality, and might just come away with far more than they bargained for.

Picked up this book after reading Kim's wonderful review over at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. I wasn't disappointed at all! However, I did find the prologue confusing because the author tries to introduce the characters in the book--the 3 sisters and a bit of their lives. There's too much information unloading for me but once I got past that, everything's fine.

What I like about this book is the connection between the characters in the story and how they slowly build up their relationship while being 'forced' to stay in the small town to rebuild the theater that belonged to their family. The plot is cliche but somehow, I still enjoyed reading what happened to the ladies. The part I like best is when Allie's daughter came on board during her school break. It's so refreshing to read about her. Her enthusiasm seemed to jump out from the book.

The Last Chance Matinee is a light read which I really enjoyed but the main problem is not over yet and to be continued in book 2 which will be released in the middle of this month. Gasp! Can't wait to read the second book to find out what happens next!

Updates

What a hectic week! I'm glad the week was over and I get to rest more this week given that Monday is my off day and Tuesday is a public holiday. Yay! I had 1 greeting card order last week, 1 customised notebook design order, 1 1000-word short story and a 7000-word short story order all in one week all piled together. Not to mention the piles of test papers to mark and return to my students. I'm dropping my short story writing service until further notice... and concentrate more on drawing greeting cards since it's much more fun anyway.
Amy's grandmother, Lady Mairead, insists that Amy must read while she resides at Lennox House—but not in the usual way. Teaming up with fellow book jumper Will, Amy vows to get to the bottom of the thefts—at whatever cost.

It's the plot that captured my attention and that cover. To be able to interact with the world inside a story is like a dream come true for readers like me. Just imagine all the possibilities and the adventures! How exciting!

Unfortunately, the book fell flat for me. It took me a long while to get into the book. I had to renew my book once because I was stubborn and wanted to read till the end despite how the story dragged on.

The main character of this story is Amy, a book jumper who didn't know she had this ability until she went to her mother's childhood home and her grandmother insisted that she read books there. There were two other book jumpers as well, Betsy and Will, from another clan. Long story short, these two families have been protecting literature since long long time ago and they were enemies of some sort in the past and now, there's someone lurking out there and stealing ideas from stories. The book jumpers have to catch the culprit before it's too late.

The book jumping and what happened in the stories was interesting to read but in terms of finding out the culprit, somehow it fell flat for me. I didn't really feel any connection with any of the characters. Although there was a surprising piece of information in the story, I'm disappointed that the story did not elaborate further on it or made use of it for something special. The final blow for me was how the book ended. I wished it didn't end it that way.

Having mentioned all the points above, the book does have its good points. I like how each chapter ended with some sort of super short paragraph that all links together to form another missing story. It's a refreshing element for me.

If you are interested in reading this book, just remember not to expect too much from the story and you'll be fine. Perhaps it was because it was a book about stories, I have quite a high expectation of it. I'm glad I finished the book!

Pax is now the head of Omnitech, the biggest company in the world. But despite all his success, he is facing a shareholder revolt and could soon lose his job as CEO of the company he founded. His only hope lies with a new project he hopes will transform human cognition and convince his doubters he is still the visionary to lead the company into the future.

However, a massive computer virus that attacks the fragile bonds holding human society together has been launched, and Pax is abruptly torn away from his concerns for his company. Soon he will have to make a decision, one that will affect the future of the human race. The choice of what to do is his, and his alone.

A clever, compelling vision of the future, The Infinet is a speculative fiction thriller that can’t be missed!

I'm normally not a fan of techology driven novels, given that I find myself confused by all the "techno-babble" these authors tend to indulge in. I'm glad to say that The Infinet manage to avoid this particular pithole. You will see techology jargon, but rather than being confused, John Akers simplify it so readers easily visualise (and wish for) all the inventions that he created in the book.

The plot is superb, creating tension and ramping it up especially in the middle of the story. I find myself unable to put it down as i wanted to discover what happens next.

However I feel the ending was a bit rushed and lacked a punch. It felt that the MC blindly stumbled about and was miraculously rewarded for doing nothing.

Having said that, I'm looking forward to the next book and see what's next for our MC.
Updates

More time spent on work, less time spent on reading. Marking students' work takes up a lot of my time lately. Besides that, I'm getting quite a few messages on my Fiverr account for my short story writing gig and I'm trying to respond to them soonest possible instead of procrastinating like I used to. Yes, I'm working on my time management as well and hopefully I'll get enough sleep with all those things that I need to do. Plus, I've got an order for a handmade watercolour greeting card which I managed to paint it today. Phew! Lots and lots of things!

Have a great week ahead, everyone!

Amy Lennox doesn't know quite what to expect when she and her mother pick up and leave Germany for Scotland, heading to her mother's childhood home of Lennox House on the island of Stormsay. Amy's grandmother, Lady Mairead, insists that Amy must read while she resides at Lennox House-but not in the usual way. It turns out that Amy is a book jumper, able to leap into a story and interact with the world inside. As thrilling as Amy's new power is, it also brings danger: someone is stealing from the books she visits, and that person may be after her life. Teaming up with fellow book jumper, Will, Amy vows to get to the bottom of the thefts-at whatever cost.

Dr. Garrett Gibson, the only female physician in England, is as daring and independent as any man—why not take her pleasures like one? Yet she has never been tempted to embark on an affair, until now. Ethan Ransom, a former detective for Scotland Yard, is as gallant as he is secretive, a rumored assassin whose true loyalties are a mystery. For one exhilarating night, they give in to their potent attraction before becoming strangers again.

A man who breaks every rule

As a Ravenel by-blow spurned by his father, Ethan has little interest in polite society, yet he is captivated by the bold and beautiful Garrett. Despite their vow to resist each other after that sublime night, she is soon drawn into his most dangerous assignment yet. When the mission goes wrong, it will take all of Garrett's skill and courage to save him. As they face the menace of a treacherous government plot, Ethan is willing to take any risk for the love of the most extraordinary woman he's ever known.
YESSS to historical romance and especially this book. I have no idea that this is out already. I've previously came across this main character in book 3 of the series and I thought it was really unusual for a lady to be a doctor during that era and I was thinking if there would be a book on her and there it is! Imagine my surprise when I see this book while I was blog hopping! I'm definitely going to get this one and give it some priority read!

Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.
Faerie! That was my first excited thought when I read the summary. It promises mystery and excitement as well. Why would the sisters be stolen away to live in the High Court of Faerie? I just had to get this book to find out and so I did!

The prologue was about the murder of their parents which had me cringing. For the girls to have witnessed it... Imagine their horror. Then the story continued into the first chapter. My first thought of it was, "Wow! What a very short first chapter!" Indeed, it is only made up of one line. 11 words to be precise.

The thing I like about this book is the few surprises that it threw at me. Things did not turn up as what I've expected and I like that. I feel that the world building is well done as well as the politics within the High Court about the succession of the throne. The thing that didn't sit well with me was the fact that the human twins managed to live with the man who murdered their parents right in front of their eyes. That's brutal!

Overall, The Cruel Prince is a well-written book which I really enjoyed a lot. A quick check on Goodreads told me book 2 will only be out in 2019 and book 3 in 2020. I don't think I can't wait that long to find out more about the story. That's the down side of reading a book when the series has yet to be completed. I'll try to be patient.

Updates

Was down with throat infection leading to flu-like symptoms since Monday. Getting better now but still had to go to the doctor's for a second time this week to get more drugs yesterday. Doctor said the symptoms might persist for another week due to infection. Meh... The drug is making me drowsy. Work is busy as usual. I'm always marking my students' papers in the afternoon before the evening lessons and by the time I got home from work, I'm totally exhausted. I managed to finish reading 2 books! What an accomplishment!
Casey knows the truth.

But it won’t set her free.

Casey Cox’s DNA is all over the crime scene. There’s no use talking to police; they have failed her abysmally before. She has to flee before she’s arrested . . . or worse. The truth doesn’t matter anymore.

But what is the truth? That’s the question haunting Dylan Roberts, the war-weary veteran hired to find Casey. PTSD has marked him damaged goods, but bringing Casey back can redeem him. Though the crime scene seems to tell the whole story, details of the murder aren’t adding up. Casey Cox doesn’t fit the profile of a killer. But are Dylan’s skewed perceptions keeping him from being objective? If she isn’t guilty, why did she run?

Unraveling her past and the evidence that condemns her will take more time than he has, but as Dylan’s damaged soul intersects with hers, he is faced with two choices. The girl who occupies his every thought is a psychopathic killer . . . or a selfless hero. And the truth could be the most deadly weapon yet.

I'm very intrigued by the plot in If I Run. So much mystery surrounding Casey Cox. What happened to her friend? What happened to her father 12 years ago? (I read from some Goodreads reviews without spoiling myself too much)

However, I did find out that If I Run is labelled as a Christian Fiction. There are readers who weren't bothered by it but there were others who minded the fact that it is a Christian Fiction. I'd like to try to book but my local library doesn't seem to have it even though it was released in 2016... It's a trilogy and all 3 books have pretty good ratings on Goodreads. I'm so very tempted!
